Contemporary poetic calligraphy: visual poetry in calligraphic form.

In 2022, Catherine de Saugy launched a series of poetic calligraphic works titled Calligraphies Poèmes, made on black Fabriano paper. Each piece, sized 59.5 × 41 cm, is a work on paper that fuses contemporary calligraphy with poetic abstraction, revealing a visual language shaped by the lyricism of the sign, the depth of emotion, and the intuition of the stroke.

The series features fifteen iterations of a single title — Poème à la Liberté — whose repetition symbolizes the idea of an infinite universal chant, each time interpreted uniquely. Through this iterative protocol, each calligraphy becomes a meditation on freedom, tolerance, hope, and the beauty contained in writing. The choice of black Fabriano paper adds strong visual presence: the contrast between ink and dark ground illuminates the page and turns each sign into a visual beacon, a constellation of meaning.

These poetic calligraphies embody an aesthetic where the rigor of gesture meets emotional depth. Catherine de Saugy conceives these works as an “Esperanto for people of goodwill,” a universal language that goes beyond words to touch the soul. The line, free and fluid, becomes cosmic calligraphy, evoking the hand of a poet, the flight of stars, and the pulse of a symbolic universe.

Through this series, Catherine de Saugy affirms her mastery of contemporary calligraphy, rooted in a deeply poetic visual sensitivity. The works on Fabriano paper she creates invite letting go, contemplation, and the intuitive reading of embodied signs—visual poetry that transcends mere writing to touch the very essence of freedom.
