Contemporary abstraction on canvas and Plexiglas: Catherine de Saugy’s Oceanic series.
Between 2011 and 2025, Catherine de Saugy developed the Oceanic series, a body of contemporary abstract works where canvas painting meets variations under Plexiglas. These compositions—bearing evocative titles such as À la mer, Vertigo, Bucolique, and L’Heure bleue—explore nature, light, and movement while opening a dialogue between pictorial tradition and digital innovation.
The artist first paints on canvas, then extends her gesture into Plexiglas variations using a high-definition giclée process applied to the reverse of the support. This hybrid method—combining manual technique with digital research—gives the works luminous intensity and a depth that exceeds the pictorial surface.
With this series, Catherine de Saugy situates her practice within contemporary abstract art, at the crossroads of lyrical heritage and geometric, light-driven exploration. Each piece expresses her drive to connect traditional painting with technological art, carving a singular path in mixed techniques applied to abstraction.
