Art photographs under Plexiglas: Catherine de Saugy’s Éclats series.

Between 2009 and 2017, Catherine de Saugy explored a series she described as “Metaphorical”, using Plexiglas as a transparent screen for her staged photographs. Inspired by the light passing through glasses placed on a tablecloth, she created striking visual images that blend reflections, transparency, and imaginary architectures. This is how « Éclats ! » was born—a series in which each photographic composition is presented under Plexiglas, enhanced by its gloss, its reflections, and its ability to capture light in an immersive way.

These works were exhibited at the Golf-Club du Château de Bonmont, as well as at Galerie Plexus in Clarens–Montreux between 2017 and 2018, highlighting the visual and poetic quality of this photographic endeavor. « Éclats ! » marks an emblematic stage for the artist: a shift toward a visual metaphor, where the photographic image converses with Plexiglas to create hybrid works with a luminous and narrative aesthetic.

Among the standout works of the series are THEATRAL (128 × 128 cm), ATTRACTION (128 × 98 cm or 98 × 128 cm), À LA PLAGE (118 × 118 cm), and Danse de Salomé (95 × 183 cm), created in 2017. Other compositions also define this period: VIVE LES VACANCES, JOKER, JEUX INTERDITS, ÉVASION, L’Oubli, MÉDITATION, MIROIR… MIROIR !, BOND 007, SILENCE, NANA, and many more. All are original works, signed, and produced under Plexiglas, each driven by an evocative visual scenography.

Technically, the series relies on Plexiglas as the preferred medium, amplifying the luminosity and depth of the photographs. The artistic approach plays on the contrast between reflection and space, generating unique visual architectures where reality and imagination overlap. Light, the central element of the whole, becomes the vehicle for a poetic and symbolic experience. With « Éclats ! », Catherine de Saugy situates herself within a contemporary photographic inquiry in which transparency and staging reveal a singular visual language, between memory, emotion, and metaphor.

Catherine de Saugy’ work is a fascinating combination of realism and fantasy, technically of the highest quality.
