« Ondes Musicales » — Contemporary calligraphy on paper

Between 2024 and 2025, Catherine de Saugy developed the Ondes musicales series, a cycle of contemporary abstract works on paper that explores correspondences between sound and light, rhythm and matter. In these compositions, the pictorial gesture becomes a silent score, where every stroke, every shade seems to vibrate in tune with an inner music.

The formats—at once intimate and open (42 × 59 cm and 59 × 42 cm)—host a choreography of lines, transparencies, and colors. Successive overlays evoke the harmonics of a chord or the breath of a suspended melody. Painting takes on an almost acoustic dimension: forms resonate, transparencies can be “listened to,” silences breathe.

With Ondes musicales, Catherine de Saugy continues her search for a visual language that is both sensitive and universal. Following the variations of the Ondes series and the luminous experiments under Plexiglas, this new exploration invites us to perceive painting as a vibration, an echo of the inner world.

These works on paper remind us that music is not only a matter of sound, but also of rhythm, breath, and presence. Each composition becomes a sustained note in time— a wave that passes through the gaze and keeps resonating long after we’ve moved on.
