Between dream and reality: Catherine de Saugy’s surrealist canvases (1992–2004).
Between 1992 and 2004, Catherine de Saugy explored on canvas a world where reality and dream meet. Heir to a musical education, she translates into painting her fascination with surrealism, nourished by her early sketches and by the call of the fantastic from the « souvenirs de croquis surréalistes » that led her toward this visual expression.
This period marks a major first stage in her artistic career: the artist moved from monumental wall panoramas (1992–1996) to more intimate compositions, where each canvas becomes a space of personal expression. It includes emblematic works such as « Trois Dames pour un Roi ! » (1994), « Mes Magiciennes » (1999–2002), and « Les 9 Muses » (2003), which testify to an inquiry spanning oneirism, symbolism, and visual poetry.
Mastery of color, light, and texture gives these paintings a unique vibration. Viewers are invited to cross the threshold into an imaginary world, nourished by musical and theatrical references, where evocative forms converse with emotion. These surrealist canvases, at once powerful and delicate, illustrate Catherine de Saugy’s evolution toward a more personal and deeply introspective art.
